Simon Imrei

Blues & folk singer/songwriter Simon Imrei has spent the last 15yrs writing, recording and performing music around Australia both under his own name, having released two acoustic EP’s and two full length albums, as well as with the likes of live sensations The Basics (feat. Gotye), alt-country troubadours Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes and Americana sweethearts The Weeping Willows.

Having grown up on the Mornington Peninsula, Simon spent his childhood riding in the back of cars along tree-lined roads and through quiet towns listening to the catchy choruses and the pop sensibility of 80s/90s radio. At home, it was his parents’ record collection which paired the storytelling songs of Paul Simon and James Taylor with the bluesy guitar playing of Jimi Hendrix and Santana. It wasn’t until after a family Christmas watching his uncle play Buddy Rich rudiments on his drumkit, that Simon discovered his love for rhythm. This underlying aspect of movement and groove has underpinned his guitar playing and songwriting ever since.

Over the years, whilst he hasn’t always toured under his own name, Simon has kept a steady roster of gigs, playing right across Victoria in cafes, pubs and winery settings. His live performance brings a mix of blues/soul and folk inspired cover versions and songs from his catalogue to life onstage and blends looped beats & layered riffs with subtle rhythms and honest storytelling.

Now in 2018, Simon has just released his second album of original material; a special two-part collection dubbed The Sum of Scenes. The two-disc album showcases a diversity of songwriting as well as many of Melbourne’s world-class musicians including Ben Franz (The Waifs), Gretta Ray, Josh Bridges (Mustered Courage), Brooke Russell, & more.
